Equine Science Training Systems

Dr. Paul McGreevy

Your Horse Industry is being taken over by stealth and You may not know it. There is a Master Plan that has been laid out, by the Scientific Community, to take control of the Industry and to replace 200 Years of History in Training, with the new future, that of Equine Science Training Systems. You will see my motivation for writing this article as You read through but the primary motivation is the genuine concern about the diminishing of Horse Training and Risk Management systems, throughout the Industry and the insult to the great Horse Trainers of the last 200 […]

Barley Grass damage to the Horse

MEADOW HAY I recently walked into a Stable on my property and saw 150mm thick of pure ‘Barley Grass’ Seeds lying on the Floor. I looked in the Tack Shed and there were 30 Bales of pure ‘Barley Grass’, a weed that has no nutrition, destroys established pastures and the seeds of which bury themselves into the gums of the Horse and can even come all the way through and burst outside the face. I immediately banned the Owner of the Horse from feeding it and asked her to remove it from the Property. She advertised it and it was […]

Pasture Management for the Horse

This is a practical guide to pasture management. Not out of the books! This is my property which had lost every ounce of top soil down the creeks and was wall to wall Salvation Jane. Why is it that everything you feed your horse comes out the other end?      This was our property. Nothing but Clay and Salvation Jane. Click on photo’s to enlarge Have you ever noticed that what you put in one end comes out the other end and actually grows? Yes, the horse has only one stomach and if you put sun flower seed in one […]

THE CAUSES AND FIX OF THE JIG JOGGING HORSE

We have all seen the horse that won’t walk whilst out on the trail ride or pleasure riding as we call it. Highly frustrating and usually ends up with the horse doing Piaffe and the rider being Pi-offed. Here’s why it happens and here’s how to fix it. THE CAUSE The material following hereafter relates to the horse at the walk, not at the trot or canter. A rider may ride on the bit or off at those two gaits. It does not matter. What does matter is how the rider rides the horse at the WALK. To be relaxed, […]

THE WIND SUCKING HORSE

The Wind Sucking Horse has a Veterinary Problem. It is not a vice but is also a legal trigger for a Veterinary Surgeon to reject a horse during an inspection for sale. The wind sucker is often under weight and I have even seen them so bad that they have died of mal nutrition because of their incessant desire to be carrying on their habit. Wind Sucking becomes a drug addiction with horses. They are addicts. Each time they suck and gulp air they receive a hit of endorphins which is similar to a drug, hence it’s addiction.   […]

NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP EXPLAINED

Natural Horsemanship has always been around, probably since the time man first interacted with the horse.  Years ago however, it was packaged by a run of American Trainers with marketing hype, buzz words, ‘touchy feely’ speak and in some cases, an almost Pentecostal delivery. Good on them as so called ‘Natural Horsemanship’ (NH) is a fantastic principal and has enlightened multitudes of closed minded people. However, lost in the euphoria has been the reality that ‘Natural Horsemanship’ as People have come to know it in these times, is only a system of Ground Manners Training. IT IS NOT a system […]

CONSTRUCTING THE ROUND PEN

I and many other Trainers around the World, believe that you can’t do the job to it’s best, without a Round Pen. I continually get asked how to build one and so here is what I have learnt. Hope it helps. I am a Fan of the Portable Round Pen and so we will deal with that here: They are relatively cheap compared to constructing in ground yourself. They offer greater flexibility of location and can be shifted around if you want. They can be taken elsewhere for a job if you like They are generally safer They only take […]
