Horse Law Australia

February 9, 2020 Equine Law Australia

In 2005, Horseproblems Australia saw the desperate need to commence an arm of the Law in this Country, to cater for Crooked Horse Sales, for back then, basically every Vet in the Country was telling every Client, “Buyer Beware” So we had meetings in Sydney, with some top Firms in each State and persuaded them to start handling these issues. Pretty soon, after we launched Horselaw Australia, others followed, including Horseforce, who I saw in the audience at Equitana, when we spoke about this. John O’Leary is a Court appointed Expert Witness, Assessor, Valuer and investigator but does not give […]

January 24, 2018

I got this letter today and contained very good questions. Hence this article: LETTER Hi John, I reckon my saddle may be due soon as its been about 3 weeks,  so i got a couple of questions to ask whilst im thinking of ’em. 1. My horses (and I) have only ever  ridden in english saddles, so I presume the chances are they may buck??? as not used to back ‘cinch’ (got the name of it right i hope) They will get used to it pretty quickly will they?? 2. How firm are they done up? 3. What is the purpose […]

Steer clear of the Stable Expert

October 11, 2017

THE STABLE EXPERT  There is one in every equestrian centre, stable block or agistment property. THEIR PROFILE They are always “Would bee’s if they could bee’s” They have a burning passion to be at the top of the tree in the horse world but never had the ability to make it. They almost always have a giant “Chip on their Shoulder” They love to knock all of the true “Tall Poppies” in the Horse Industry like horseman, veterinary surgeons, farriers and the like They rarely ever ride their own horse and when they do they do it badly. They keep […]

Starting Horses – how long should it take?

October 11, 2017

MOUTHING DVD PURCHASE LETTER I bought a young horse a year ago had a well known trainer breaker him in, had him for 12 weeks breaking him in. The trainer only rode him in the round yard, which I thought was a bad sign at end of breaking. I could not ride him, I could feel he was going to explode when I got on him.  I do believe the trainer did not do enough ground work. I sold him to another trainer for 1500 told them he was not broken properly. I paid double for horse, paid more again […]

CONSTRUCTING THE ROUND PEN

November 6, 2013

I and many other Trainers around the World, believe that you can’t do the job to it’s best, without a Round Pen. I continually get asked how to build one and so here is what I have learnt. Hope it helps. I am a Fan of the Portable Round Pen and so we will deal with that here: They are relatively cheap compared to constructing in ground yourself. They offer greater flexibility of location and can be shifted around if you want. They can be taken elsewhere for a job if you like They are generally safer They only take […]

SELF EMPTYING SADDLES

November 6, 2013

Go here for Saddles I get thousands of letters regarding people falling off Horses and getting severely injured. In my opinion, part of the problem here is that people ride ‘suspect, young or Green Horses’ in ‘SELF EMPTYING SADDLES I speak of the “English Saddle’ as opposed to the Western, Stock or Half Breed Saddles that are on the Market. Now there is nothing whatsoever wrong with English Saddles. They are completely necessary for their use but the point I make is that far too many people risk themselves by riding suspect Horses in them. The chances of falling out […]

TOP 10 REASONS WHY GREEN HORSES BUCK

November 6, 2013

TOP12 REASONS Girthiness not taken in account enough Learned Helplessness Because the horse did not respect the breaker or the owner Because “Green on Green don’t go” Because the owner thought that riding on the arena was safer than on the trail Because of a lack of proper warm up in the saddling process Because the owner insisted upon mainly walking the horse rather trotting and cantering, boring it into rebellion. Because the horse never felt exhaustion during the breaking in process. (especially at the canter) Because the owner jammed the horse up during flatwork and didn’t get it forward […]

THE WAR BRIDLE/DUALLY/FEEL GOOD HALTER

November 6, 2013

Hi John, Heard about this on a web-forum: Not sure what to think of it…. One of those things that at first glance you might say “oh neat” and then think about it some more and be a little concerned! The Dually Halter Cheers Wendy REARING This is a very interesting subject Wendy. In essence, this is a ‘WAR BRIDLE’ dressed up as a rope Halter and with a quaint name for marketing purposes. The War Bridle as invented and used by Old Australian Horsemen of the past, is a very vicious piece of work and makes virtually 100% of […]
