Hi Folks,
Horses are eternal triers and feeding time is where your pecking order in the Herd is assessed and established.
In their Herd, that includes biting and kicking and this can include You!!!!
Trust me, if you want to stay safe in Horse Ownership, establish a feeding time ritual. That includes:
Making the Horse Stand off until you have completely mixed the food in the bowl. 'Stand Off' means at least 8 metres.
Take a long whip, plastic bag on a pipe or any other frightening object, to re-train.
Once mixed, stand DIRECTLY between the Feed Bin and the Horse and invite it up. It will come forward or you go forward and here is the important point.
Give the Horse ONE STROKE down the face, turn and walk briskly away, NOT LOOKING at the horse. Pretty soon, this will become an automatic 'Head Present' as an offer of respect.
DON'T EVER!!!!.....interfere with a horse at Feed time. This is their private time and you will simply be asking for trouble if you try.
This Young Horse was then started by me, ridden all around the City and sent Home. 'Mother' then reverted back to her old habits, sitting on his Feed Bin and massaging his Ears.
