Peer Review – Dr. Paul McGreevy

July 3, 2017

N.S.W. University of Equine Science – Professor Dr. Paul McGreevy.

Take a look at this Video that popped up on my YouTube News.

With the advent of the Internet, everyone can be an overnight sensation and those who may have harbored the romantic notion of being a Horse Trainer, can have their wish granted with the flick of a switch.

It has been a concern of mine for some Years now, that Scientist are often Peer reviewing Horse Trainers like Monty Roberts and others but no one has ever Peer reviewed a Scientist. Scientists are presently taking over the education of so called ‘Horsemanship’ and yet they are not qualified to do so. They are giving dangerous advice which is a huge ‘Risk Management’ issue and not only will the Pupils learn incorrectly but they may well be injured or killed. The Horses will suffer.

So let me be the first ‘Horseman’ to review a Scientist.

This Video is a ‘Risk Management’ Nightmare. https://youtu.be/ZsBjRwv04c0 and it is a good example of the dangers of very Credible People from the Research side of the Horse Industry, trying to make the transformation to Horsemanship.

The Horse is portrayed as unbroken and having stuff done on Day 1 of it’s starting. (although I can and You probably will also, see that this is certainly not the case) but the Young and those entering the Industry and learning, WILL NOT. They will go and copy!!!!!!!!!!!….with a feral.

WARNING FOR THOSE WATCHING – follow none of the advice!!

Don’t lead a Young Horse like this. You are training the following:

    • To be heavy in the Head due to the battle of force
    • To be constantly invading Your space into the future
    • That standing upon Humans is the comfort zone going forward and such Horses ALL become addicted to being ‘in Your Face and actually think they must.
    • To be learning to manipulate You with their Body mass and strength.
    • To jump on Your Body the moment it shies. (Horses lead like this are mentally captured that they must be on top of You and are the one’s that ALWAYS Jump on You. Natural Horsemanship Trained Horses JUMP AWAY from You)
    • And there is something strange about the habit that comes from the British side of Training, that get’s People who lead a Horse, to “Glare’ at the Horse. I cannot explain that. I advise You to make love to your Horse.

img42

Happiness is…but wait….virtually everyone who is British Trained, will Yell in unison “but she has no control, she will get killed”…….in fact, as i said, Natural Horsemanship Trained Horses simply run away from your Body, NOT ON IT.

img246

The ‘British Disciplines’ teach that this is How You Lead a Horse. It may be one way but it is the MOST dangerous way, with the MOST accidents. It ensured ‘ignorance’ in the Horse.

For reasons exhibiting a lack of belief in the method, People who thrust their arm out straight, to lead a Horse, admit they are in for a fight.

It is handed down from the British Horse Society, through Pony Club Australia and now even to the new Equestrian Australia teaching of the next Generation via this complete with the unhappy Horse

img43

Don’t ever train this stuff whilst a Young Horse is tied Solid or at a Tie Up Rail. You can see the horse is at the end of it’s Rope here. The chance of Pull back is high. The Risk is high. Don’t ever place risk with Horse Training. Eliminate it always.

img247

Dont’t play with the Ears of a Horse that doesn’t have a problem. The chance of them becoming paranoid is probably. Don’t get ‘Paralysis of the Analysis’ They get well used to Hands touching Ears through the Bridling process.

img1Bdd8

Don’t ever ‘Bag Down’ a Horse at a Tie Up Rail, Tide Solid in such a facility or on such a surface., beneath a Roof. Do all Your work in a Round d Pen.

Don’t EVER tie to a lump of Wood!!!!!!! It will break and Kill You or the Horse.
Don’t ever tie Solid to something that will break, splinter, spear and worse

imgA7

THIS IS RECOGNIZED AS A SAFETY KNOT. However, let me warn You that this not be useful as the Rail will already be broken and/or You CANNOT attempt to release such a knot whilst a Young Horse is pulling back or throwing the front Legs. You will be injured. In the real World, these things don’t work. The Horse may be galloping down the Road having it’s Legs ripped to pieces, by the broken Rail

Learn how to tie a knot in a Rope Halter. This is incorrect. When the Horse pulls back, this knot slips, enlarging the Halter, sliding it down, into the Mouth and BREAKING THE JAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
2-Capturemcgreevy-knot

This is NOT how You tie a Rope Halter knot and for very good reasons. This is s slip knot.

This is the Rope Halter knot and it becomes the ‘Bowline’ or ‘Horseman’s’ knot. The only one that won’t slide and allow the Halter down the Face, into the Mouth and Break the Jaw. The only knot that You can undo if a Horse pulls back.

NEVER Tie a Young Horse up WITHOUT A Neck Strap or You will inflict Veterinary damage and psychological Problems of the future, which cause ‘Violent Pull Back Horses’. Pain during the formative Training causes memories that won’t be forgotten. Violent Pull back Horses are caused by the memories of Pain.

“Never tie an ‘unbroken, Green or suspect Horse’ up with a Rope Halter alone. Nerve Damage is rife, Poll damage is rife and I have even seen damage to the Guttural Pouch. “

Never use a Rope Halter that is as vicious and abrasive as this one. El Cheapo. If You are going to risk it, use what I describe as a “Tying Up’ Rope Halter, with Softer Braid and THICKER dimensions.

The Good Doctor is Head of a Group including Dr. Andrew McLean, who run a new cause, described as ‘ethology’, with the predominant aim being Welfare in Horse Training. The above Photo should be proof of my point about a ‘little knowledge being dangerous’ for there would be no doubt that the good Doctor would not want to hurt a Horse.

NEVER GIRTH up a Young Horse whilst tied up!!!!!!!!! Never put a Bridle on a Young Horse whilst tied up. Never take either off either. The majority of ‘Ear Shy Horses’ are caused by the unbridling process and being tied up almost guarantees that, with ‘Green Horses’

  • 5-girth-up-tied-up

Many Tie Up Rails these Days have Cement Floors. You cannot risk Pull back on such surfaces.

Many will Buck with first or more Girthing’s. Don’t ever Girth up a Young, unbroken, Green or suspect Horse at a Tie Up Rail and CERTAINLY, never tied up Solid.

The more narrow the Girth, the greater the chance of Bucking.

You cannot assess the ‘Girthiness’ of a Horse at a Tie Up Rail.

DON’T EVER WALK UNDER THE NECK OF A HORSE TIED SOLID and especially a ‘Breaker’ tied dangerously.!!!! You may lose Your Life.

6-walking-under-neck

DON’T EVER WRAP ROPES AROUND YOUR LIMBS, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT HAS AN ACCIDENTAL KNOT IN IT!!!!!!!!!!

7-loop-around-the-hand

And don’t ever do this when catching a Horse!! You work it out

7-loop-around-the-hand

There could be much more to this review as the examples are many more.

Scientists should stay out of Horsemanship and use their considerable skills for what they do best. Veterinary. The British Disciplines only have ears for Scientists and so the void of Horsemanship will continue and that equals an attack on Horse Welfare.

I have just enrolled in a ‘Horsemanship Course’ with the F.E.I. My first Exam question is “What is ‘Horsemanship?’ I went for the answer and got given around 30 Papers to go and read, for the answer. Virtually all were written by Thesis writers who obtained a Doctorate. I will not find the answer there. 🙁

This is the Classic example of what I have been raving about for Years. Those who write the Rules for the Horse Industry and generally those who don’t have a clue when it comes to RISK!!!!
