This is ‘Learned Helplessness’ in Horse training. It comes in many forms and is really, a Welfare issue. This article will explain it:
SOME OTHER EXAMPLES
The Ground Handling teachings of the British Horse Society, passed down through all of the Equestrian Bodies and Pony Club, produce “Learned Helplessness’ the majority of cases. This is because they are designed to cause “Fighting or wrestling with Horses”
For clarity, here are the two basic Ground Handling systems and I want you to pay particular attention to the Faces of all the Horses!!
The British way
Of course, the Horse with the Young Lad, has “Learned Helplessness. So why is it so?
Learned Helplessness equals depression
Horses do nothing but try, until they can try no more. They have tired and failed because they have offered and offered, answered and answered, endlessly, to the Push and Pull, giving subtle tries all the while but receiving nothing but more push and pull. In the end, they just shut down and pretend they are not here.
So please Folks, look for a better way and do think about the Mental happiness of Your Horses.
