THE OXYGEN OF TRAINING

I will now attempt to simply explain what is behind all successful training of horses. Brave, aren’t I? Here is an example of what works, what doesn’t,  what is correct and what is incorrect. Little Johnny brings his horse up to the back of the horse float because he wants to go to Pony Club. Horsy doesn’t really want to go cause he knows he is in for a tough day if he does. He baulks at the back of the float and Johnny produces a carrot from his back pocket. Horsy eats the carrot but refuses to go in […]

LEARNED EVASIONS

Just about every problem that a rider gets with horses is caused by a slow progression of “Learned Evasions” These evasions are what causes all of the resistances that horses give riders’ and are the prime driving force towards the learning of how and why to resist. Evasion can give a horse relief from the incompetence of a rider or just plain simply get them out of working properly. Horse ‘go to school’ on everything You do. They are always willing to learn, but behind the scenes, negative Lessons are often happening, without the Rider knowing. If I start a […]

WHY IS MY HORSE MIS-BEHAVING?

I have been prompted to write this article because in the last month, December, 2003, virtually every horse that was sent to us for re-education, in other words (Problem Horses), had various Veterinary problems which were the reason for their behavior. How unfair on horses is this? The mind boggles at what horses have to go through in this Country and it is mainly caused due to a lack of education about the things that matter most. How cruel? Almost daily, I meet people who tell me how much they love their horses and that no-one can look after them […]

QUESTIONS OF CONSCIENCE

Here are a few questions that I have asked myself over the years and encourage you to do so too: Do we worm our horse on the recommended due dates? Do we have our horses teeth checked every six months? Do we treat our horse for sand? Do we ensure there is a dry area for our horse to stand on in wet times? Do we clean the stable of urine and manure regularly? Do we use lunging as a behavioral fix? I hope not! Do we have our horse’s hooves attended to when due or do we wait until […]

THE NERVOUS RIDER. WHAT TO DO?

I have met my share of Nervous Riders’ in my day and have fixed a few too. (escorting over 50,000 of them on Holidays on Horseback)..we never lost one of them As a matter of interest, they are almost always female and mostly have had kids, suffered bad experiences, got hurt, bucked off, although falls off horses when starting out does see kids suffer from it too. To qualify the ‘female’ point, two things. The majority of the Horse World are female and it is a fact that male riders’ get less worried and are more ‘gung ho’ WHAT MAKES […]

HORSE ASSESSING THE RIDER AND THE GAMES THEY PLAY

We think that we are the only ones doing the assessing during the relationship with the horse but I can assure you that there is just as much assessing being done by the horse as that being done by us. They carry on this procedure in silence and make assumptions about us and decide how to deal with us as a result. When people enter the Horse Industry, they find out somehow that horses are pretty much perfectly behaved and don’t have many faults. Ok, we are to blame for most of the ridden faults in horses but they must […]

LACKING COMMITTMENT??

Every Coach and Professional would experience dealings with people who have a dear passion for the Horse Industry and horses but who just don’t cut it, are not of the profile necessary to achieve success and who go on year after year in failure, often with horse after horse. Some in my experience, for decades. If You don’t have commitment, You can never be seriously successful Rarely do they get told because in this enlightened World of ‘Politically correctness’ which I call ‘speaking with a forked tongue’, people just continue to take their money, mouth the same old things to […]

DO HORSES LOVE US?

Well I don’t think they do. I certainly love them but I am fairly sure they only respect me. Respect to them is probably Love anyway. However, this is not about me, it is about others…… I often notice that when people enter the Horse Industry, they try desperately to win the love of their new horse. I feel that their belief that one can achieve this is brought about by the thousands of horse books that have come onto the market, mostly from England, where horse ownership is talked about in “touchy feely”, almost fairy tale terms. I have […]

UNDERSTAND THE MIND OF YOUR HORSE

When you are young, you probably really don’t think about things like this. I didn’t. I just rode em. The more that I have, the more that I have got out of horses and the more that I have been able to fix the major problems that I encounter. Unfortunately they cannot speak. Well, they can, but rarely can a human understand what they are saying. What a plaintiff thought that is? There have been many worthwhile Quotes made by ‘Horse Whisperers’ over the Years. Here is one of them: “A good rider can hear his horse speak, a great […]
