LETTER OF THE DAY

Thank you John

Do you have any articles on your website as to why you donít like leading the horses from the shoulder as most people believe horses should be lead at the shoulder (I am teaching my foals your method as I have proof it works) & as a person learning I find it so frustrating that so many so called horse people tell you so many different things & they are right & everyone else is wrong?

Regards

Kath

Hi Kath.. It is not that I am against it of course....my own Horse won 34 Shows and 29 Championships out of 39 Shows, all lead as per the requirements of the Show tradition of the Breed. When in Rome, do as they do. The point is though, if leading in such a way, it MUST BE done with Manners shown by the Horse.

Now I write for the Novice Owner in mind, always and therefore, they are far more protected, from physical injury and adverse attitudinal changes in their Horses, all the way up to being Bucked Off, if they keep Horses OUT OF THEIR SPACE. "What you train on the Ground, you Inherit under Saddle". When People read me go on about this Subject, I am sure many must chuckle and think I am over the Top, however, I am driven from a Day to Day Life of so called "Problem Horses" and relate real Life Stories about them. Those 'Problem Horses" are Manufactured by Humans and the MOST predominant reason for such is the way of Leading and the Fighting with Horses on the Ground.

Not only does such wrestling with Horses cause the unwinnable competition between 'Man and Beast' put the Human in Danger but it affects the very relationship between them. It detrimentally affects the RESPECT , it causes fighting to go on between Owner and Horse and more. Lack of Respect means a lack of Like. Horses Judge others via Ground Control. They assess Humans via Ground Control. Why do you think "Join Up" was invented?

PSYCHOLOGY

Horses that are lead without Rules, become psychologically brainwashed by default, to think that they have to be standing within the space of the Human. So much so that they lose their independence and free Spirit and actually CANNOT handle staying out of the space. Attempt to ask them to stand out and they cannot. They are addicted, just like a Drug.

read this Today

Well the horse that fell over the other day had no respect for my space from the moment I caught her so is behaving as though she has been lead pony club style. And when panicking with the hobbles the first time was wanting to jump on me. The 2nd time she wasn't trying to jump on me and the panic was less although she fell over

OTHER SPIN OFFS

  • Pull against Horses and they pull back, push against Horses and they push back....force meets force...we are weaker, they are stronger, they believe they are in charge. Then there are the many other Spin Offs that come with it.

  • When a Horse has to or thinks it has to, continually fight with you in a Tug of War, with the Handler continually pushing, poking or jagging on Ropes, the Horse is UNHAPPY. Little do those who "Lurve their Horses so much" know that a lot of their Horses are depressed as a result of the constant fighting.

  • When a Human fights with the Head of a Horse, they are ruining the "Lightness' in the Halter and are training ignorance.

  • When a Human continually Fights with the Head of a Horse, it is ruining the Mouth of the Horse and making it more ignorant under Saddle

  • and as I said at the start, they often manufacture their own downfall, all the way to 'Buck Off'

Then you add the Webbing, Leather, Plastic Halters and the Pony Club Lead Rope and the rest is History

So once again, the well ground Mannered Horse can be lead in any manner at all, without any adverse results for the Handler or the relationship. .....but it has to be WITHIN THE RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TIED UP HORSES

The Tie Up facility has the ultimate timing, the ultimate reward and relief and never makes mistakes. Horses NEVER get confused, know the Rules and understand them completely. However, I often see People who make a big issue about Horses that move about whilst tied up. Before I go on, let me say that the only rule should be that if they want to move around (as they should for they are not statues or Robots) then if within your prescience, like Saddling up, they do it only away from you and within the Parameters of never invading your space and making you move your Feet.

To continually interfere with the free Spirit of the Horse, by grabbing the lead rope and pulling on it, pushing Heads and Necks and being generally over the top on a Horse being a Statue, rather than simply allowing the Tie Up Rail to do the talking, is to completely and utterly undo the Halter Breaking lightness that a Horse may have had and to frustrate the Hell out of it make it's Life a turmoil. Such activitie equals stress and that is the last thing you want in a Horse that you may be just about to work with. As I said before, the Tie up Rail never makes mistakes and the Horse easily and happily accepts this so I strongly recommend that you just leave it to do the job.

Regards
